La plupart du temps, quand un peintre choisit de traiter un sujet philosophique, il peint un texte. Un texte ou une phrase de ce texte, un moment de ce texte, voire un mot. Comme il est difficile de peindre une idée, il lui faut peindre un clin d'oeil qui dira cette idée à laquelle se résume la totalité de la pensée du philosophe : ce clin d'oeil est un détail, or le diable est dans les détails. Ce qu'il faut voir dans une peinture que je dirai philosophique, c'est le détail qui résume cette philosophie.
Pour Anaxagore, c'est une lampe à huile, des légumes pour Pythagore, une cruche pour Socrate et Xanthippe, des larmes pour Héraclite, un rire pour Démocrite, une coupe pour Socrate, une lanterne pour Diogène, une caverne pour Platon, un crocodile pour Aristote, une lancette pour Sénèque, un pain pour Marc-Aurèle, une coquille pour Augustin, ceci pour rester dans les limites de la philosophie antique.
De Pythagore à Derrida, via Descartes et Kant, Montaigne et Rousseau, Voltaire et Nietzsche parmi d'autres, en trente-quatre toiles, donc en trente-quatre philosophes, Michel Onfray propose une histoire de la philosophie par la peinture !

Mucho se habló de este libro cuando apareció en 1979, mas la atención y la polémica se centraron entonces en su implacable diagnóstico sobre la realidad social de Italia, un país «sin verdades» de acuerdo con el categórico dictamen de Sciascia: la lectura estaba irremediablemente supeditada al impacto de los hechos, algunos aún presentes en la conciencia colectiva aunque ya alejados en el tiempo (el caso del bandido Giuliano, por ejemplo), otros tan inmediatos y urgentes como el affaire Moro, cuya ominosa sombra recorre estas páginas a modo de fantasmal inquilino. Negro sobre negro se fraguó durante diez años turbulentos, los comprendidos entre 1969 y 1979, y a sus turbulencias remite una y otra vez sometiéndolas a un escrutinio a veces despiadado pero siempre sutil. Hoy, sin embargo, liberado el lector de la «actualidad», convertidos los hechos en «historia», cabe una relectura donde el discurso político nacido de la urgencia conviva con (y se integre en) una más amplia y no menos lúcida reflexión sobre las formas de representar el mundo mediante palabras, es decir, sobre las posibilidades y límites de la literatura, esa incómoda (o desleal) acompañante de la realidad aquí definida como «sistema de “objetos eternos”… que de forma variada, alternativa e imprevisible resplandecen y se eclipsan, para resplandecer y eclipsarse de nuevo –y así sucesivamente– a la luz de la verdad» (definición rematada, significativamente entre paréntesis, con una sentencia de aire paradójico: la literatura «es la forma más absoluta que la realidad puede cobrar»). Sciascia recoge la candela de Montaigne para buscar la claridad, o más bien el escéptico claroscuro, en la noticia, la anécdota, la impresión repentina, pero sabe que no lo mueve la atracción de la luz sino el empuje de las sombras.
